“From last Friday through last night, Tuesday, Madras swimmers (MST & MHS) have turned up the heat even more on record books. MST competed in Lake Osego last weekend, and Madras High competed at home last night (Tuesday). For MST, Lexi Williams lowered four of her MST records- the 50, 100, and 200 freestyles and the 100 individual medley. Most impressive was her 11 second drop in the 200 freestyle from 2:30 to 2:19. Kami Ackley reacquired the 50 backstroke record from Lexi lowering it by a wide margin to 37.07 from 38.58. The effort qualifies Kami for state in the event. Eleven-year-old Kaitlyn McMorrow began her anticipated assault on the MST 11-12 girls records by taking out current MST member Aurora Gerhardt’s 1:06.08 mark in the 100 freestyle, and lowering it to 1:05.85. Finally for MST, Ethan Graeme predictable blew through the 100 backstroke record which stood at 1:12. Ethan dropped a 1:08.37! Ethan also showed some somewhat unanticipated endurance establishing a new MST mark in the 200 freestyle clocking an impressive 2:14.96. Both Kaitlyn and Ethan Have qualified for state in several events. Wrapping up MST’s solid performances were: Julian Hollingshead qualifying for state for the first time in the 50 breaststroke; Conner Flu also adding new events to his state program; and, Colby Anderson-O’Brien will be joining Ethan, Conner and Julian on three relays at state.
Turning to Madras High, Garrett Webb confidently lowered his record in the 50 freestyle from 22.83 to 22.43- a huge drop in the shortest of races. Twenty minutes later, Garrett lowered his 100 freestyle record from 50.60 to 50.33 despite a relaxed first 25 yards.
Madras Swim Team next competes at the MAC Saturday, February 4th at noon. Madras High next competes in Sweet Home Wednesday, February 1st, weather dependent. Way to go local swimmers.”
The 10-year old girls showed no sign of letting up on re-writing the MST record board. Friday night, Lexi Williams took down the last standing record from 2011. Her time of 2:53.74 lowered the previous record by 14 seconds, and easily qualified her for state. On Saturday morning, Kami Ackley got in the act by equaling Lexi’s 50 free record with a two second drop, posting 31.15, and qualifying for state next month. Being co-record holder was short lived as Lexi laid down the hammer in the next heat posting a jaw dropping 29.60. Anytime a 10-year old posts a sub 30 second 50 freestyle, it is something special. Next up Sophie Nelson, obliterating her own 100 butterfly record by 11 seconds, posting a 1:34.86 (and going under Tujo’s 1:37 set in prior heat). Finally, Alexis Tujo took another second off her own 50 breaststroke record with a time of 45.94; and broke Sophie’s 100 butterfly record and held it for one heat as well! The four girls teamed up for the 200 free relay and officially qualified for state in a time of 2:16.78.
Other swimmers making the trek were: 7-year Ava Williams swimming back and free; 8-year old Mylaena Norton lowering her own team record in the 25 breaststroke; 11-year old Kaitlyn McMorrow who swam several events within a whisper of best times despite a tough training regimen over the past three weeks including training with world-renowned Tucson Ford Aquatics in Arizona for several days last month; 12-year old Ellie Williams establishing personal bests in several events by wide margins; 12-year old Ethan Graeme who swam a very good 100 IM; and, finally Emma Shierk, who just aged up to 13-14 age group this week, had solid swims in the 50 and 200 freestyles.
